Billing Theory
We are a business, so we necessarily must go about the mundane task of billing our clients. There are two main methods of billing that businesses usually use: hourly or flat fee. Some clients prefer one way or another, we are flexible. In the past we had recommended an hourly billing method coupled with an experienced target-range quote. We thought this would save our clients money because they would only pay for the work that we do. But inevitably we found that projects always ended up taking 2 or 3 times as long as we estimated, and we didn't feel the freedom to actually charge for the work that we did. So we were always forced to figure out what we would and would not bill for. In the end, we didn't get paid for most of our work, and clients were confused how the costs exceeded our estimate. So we have recently switched to a flat project based quote.

With flat project based quotes, we must attempt to anticipate every extra cost and potential disagreement point (what resources are included, how many revisions are allowed at each stage, and the inevitable confusion over what was or was not included). So our Work Statements are now much more detailed, in attempt to better define the scope of the project and the price for said scope. And extra work that arises as the project progresses will be added to a second Work Statement to keep tasks and billing from being confused. We hope that this will give our clients peace of mind, knowing that the price is set. And it will allow us to focus more on doing the best job we can even if it means extra time spent on a project, without having to worry about the actual hours worked.

Of course, we prefer working for people for whom money is no object, but if this does not describe you, we are sure you will find our flat project based quotes generally the best. Either way we make sure we offer competitive prices, while still paying our employees a fair wage for their excellent work. We are in business for the long haul, so we want to make sure our employees are happy and the company is profitable. Both of these things benefit our clients.
