What is a PMS color?

Question
My printer says I need to have my branding files set up with PMS colors. What does that mean?
Answer
PMS stands for Pantone Matching System. It's one of the two main color systems used by printers. They are also called spot colors and they're usually only used for one and two-color projects. They tend to be brighter than regular four color (CMYK) printing. For a more extensive overview take a look at this recent article on spot printing.
