Free Third Party SPAM Filtering
Question
Can I use Gmail or Yahoo as my SPAM filter?
Answer
Companies like Google Mail, Yahoo!, and Hotmail, handle mail for a living. So it's no surprise that they have better than average SPAM filters. So if you find that our Industry standard SPAM filter (Spam Assassin) is not tough enough for you, because you got on a really bad spam mailing list, you certainly can use a third party email account to filter your email. It's really quite a simple concept.
Forward Mail to Third Party Account
Ask our support staff to redirect your mail to a third party email address. Or if you have requested and have been given access to your server's control panel, login and do it yourself:
1. Login at: http://www.mydomain.com/server_admin
2. Go to: Home > Mail > (choose the account in question)
3. Go to the "Redirect" button and enter your third party email address in the Redirect interface, then save.
4. Go to the "Mailbox" button and disable the local mailbox by un-checking "mailbox", then save.
5. Go to the Spam Filter and disable filtering, then save.
6. Go to the "Permissions" button and uncheck all the options, then save.
Third Party Mail Account Filters Your Mail
We recommend using Gmail because they support POP3 which will let you download your mail in the next step. But all the accounts will filter your mail through their advanced filters and store it in your inbox like normal. You can either just use their online interface to read and send mail, or you can check this email from your personal computer using POP (or IMAP if they support it). See next step for more information about this.
Check Mail on Local Computer
If your third party email account supports POP or IMAP access (currently only Gmail supports this and only POP), they will have special instruction on how to enable POP or IMAP access, and specific information about what mail server names to use. Here are the Authorized Instruction to Enable POP on Gmail.
Setup an account in your Mail program on your local computer to check this third party email account locally. The mail sent to your name@domain.com goes to our server, gets forwarded to your third party email account, gets filtered, then is checked and downloaded to your computer locally. All this happens very quickly and is a simple way to apply the filtering power of these email companies to your personal email account.
See our FAQ and downloadable Guide on setting up your local email account for POP or IMAP for more information on this step.
