Video Format

Question

What format should my video be and how do I upload it to my site?

Answer

In order to display videos on your website, you must upload the video file in .flv (Flash Video) format to your multimedia resource library, at the exact resolution (size) and quality you want it to appear on your site.

Your Multimedia Resource Library is found at: Site > Resource Library > Multimedia > Library. You will want to create some categories first, and then click "Add" and choose the file you want to upload, add relevant description data and upload. If it's a large file, please be patient while it uploads as fast as your internet connection will allow.

FLV is a standard encoding option for most video editing tools. The advantage of FLV is that it will play in the Flash Player already integrated with your site, and Flash is a universally installed plugin. That means visitors don't need to download some special player, e.g. Windows Media Player (which isn't supported on Macs anymore), Real Player, etc. The FLV format is superior to all these other formats, because it just works, all the time, for everyone.

If you are creating your own videos, and your video software does not have the ability to export as FLV, you should consider buying a version of Macromedia Flash (professional version), which includes a Flash Video encoder. Alternatively you can buy other third party encoding tools that will export in this format. A google search for "Flash Video Encoder FLV" will turn up some likely options. Owning your own encoding software will pay for itself very quickly if you are needing to encode videos regularly.

If you don't plan on encoding videos on a regular basis, we are glad to encode and upload your videos for you. Please export the video in Quicktime format at the resolution (size) and quality you want the video to display on your website, and then post it to our FTP server.
